Open Nepal is a community of practice and knowledge hub for organizations and people that produce, share, and use data for development.

Open Nepal is a knowledge hub and a learning space for organizations and people that produce, share and use data for development or are interested to learn more about open data. By bringing together a community of practice in Nepal around topics such as the open data and access to information, Open Nepal forms a platform for people to share their experiences of using and sharing data and information, take collective action and generate solutions to common problems. The Community of Practice and Knowledge Hub contribute towards an enabling environment and build a movement for the sharing and use of (open) data for development in Nepal.

Promoting the sharing and use of data for development

Accessible, usable, timely and complete data is core to sustainable development and social progress. Better use of high quality data provides people with a base to make informed decisions on policy, planning and practice; monitor development progress; and support accountability. But too often attempts to deliver sustainable economic, social and environmental results are hindered by the failure to get the right information, in the right format, to the right people, at the right time. An international movement to improve the production, sharing and use of data and information for better decisions is underway. If harnessed in Nepal, this movement – the “Data Revolution for Sustainable Development” – will encompass a profound shift in the effectiveness of development for the poorest people.

Open Nepal exists to improve how data for development is produced, shared and used in Nepal by supporting a community of civil society groups, media, private sector, government and academia to share data lessons, experiences, expertise and ideas. Through this, Open Nepal works to encourage productive collaboration between Nepal’s suppliers, intermediaries and users of data, thereby strengthening progress towards Nepal’s Data Revolution for Sustainable Development.
